چکیده

Many years of experience in several industries have shown that the use of wastes as alternative fuels in cement plants is both ecologically and economically justified. However, there are several factors that need assessment before using alternative fuels. Further, availability and cost are important factors too. Along with other alternative fuels, literature and case studies have revealed that use of tire derived fuels in cement kiln is technically and economically viable option. Therefore, use of waste tires in Indian cement kilns to the possible extent is suggested in the study. Few cement plants have initiated studies on use of tire derived fuel in their plants. However, due to delay in setting norms by authorities, they could not bring it to application level so far. The co-combustion of alternative fuels will definitely help to reduce the energy costs thereby providing competitive edge for Indian cement plants. To use alternative fuels, Government’s support and industries initiatives both are equally essential.
